In all great cultures of the world,
and at all times, music was the queen of wisdom and was called upon to help
develop the divine powers bestowed on man. For the people of these high cultures
music comprised the infinite sphere of cosmic harmony – inaccessible
to the uneducated ear, yet infinitely familiar to the initiate, to the knower
of truth, to the lover of truth.
By virtue of music, the laws of nature blossomed in perfect unfoldment in these highly developed civilizations, and those divine gifts in man, too, which enable him, out of his innermost freedom, to handle the forces of nature completely playfully.
In all great ages of mankind music was deeply linked to day-to-day practical life. This relation was so clearly known and accepted, that music was regarded the basis for the preservation of an existing culture.
In any developed civilization known to us, musical-artistic training was the beginning of education. The educational focus was on cultivating the mind, to holistically form man from the level of his innermost self, and to guide his life to perfection.
In the course of time, mankind lost this great insight into the development of wholeness of life and thus became involved in the struggle of daily existence. This cultural decay was tied to the deterioration of order in music.
The great thinkers of mankind even stated that the loss of the musical order was the cause for cultural decline.
A decline in culture always brings music to a level where it is enjoyed only for sensual pleasure, and from this moment music falls into ill repute.
Consequently music is ousted from the world of enlivened silence into the field of cold noise. Orchestras grow into gigantic proportions, and the meaning of life is shattered on the music-making masses.
The interpretation becomes more important than the underlying meaning of the musical work, and the superhuman element is dragged down to the level of mundane passions.
In the music industry, emphasis is on the stimulation of body-related feelings and trivial sensations.
The knowledge of the essence of music is lost. It has been forgotten that true music reveals human, superhuman, and cosmic relationship, and that the tones represent cosmic numbers, and can be powerful symbols. That music has the power to enchant the soul of man, today seems a notion of the awkward fantasy of just a few music "fools."
